May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and while we often focus on technical training, hiring pipelines, and labor market data, it's just as important to pause and ask: Are we creating workplaces where people actually feel supported?
Mental Health is Workforce Readiness
The next generation of talent are entering the workforce with big goals and high expectations. They're also more open about mental health than any generation before. They want to work for companies that "get it" and where they feel respected, included, and supported.
And the truth is: when we make a space for mental well-being, we help people do their best work. They stay longer. They contribute more. And they tell others that this is a good place to be.
What Can Employers Do?
This doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Supporting mental health often looks like small things done consistently.
- Be clear with expectations.
- Starting a new job (or internship) can be overwhelming. A clear roadmap builds confidence and reduces stress.
- Normalize regular check ins
- Asking "How's it going?" and actually meaning it helps people feel seen.
- Build in flexibility (when possible)
- Whether it's a shift adjustment or understanding when life happens, a little grace goes a long way.
- Point to resources
- If your business offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or wellness benefits, don't assume that people know about them.
- Not currently offering resources? Perhaps research some businesses in our Chamber's Directory who offer EAPs or wellness programs.
- Foster belonging
- Inclusion, mentorship, and simple recognition all help reduce isolation and build community.
Building a Workforce that Lasts
At the end of the day, our workforce is make up of people. And people thrive when they feel safe, supported, and valued for not just what they can do but who they are.
